Bringing Your Dog or Cat to the United Kingdom on PCS Orders
From the U.S., the UK’s medical requirements are light: no rabies blood test, no waiting period, and no quarantine when the paperwork is right. What makes the UK one of the hardest moves in Europe is how your pet gets there. Pets can’t fly into the UK in the cabin on commercial flights, they must arrive on an approved route, and a dog’s tapeworm treatment has to land in a five-day window.
This guide covers the UK’s requirements step by step, the Patriot Express from Baltimore to RAF Mildenhall, what the military reimburses, and which dogs can’t enter at all. Across The Pond Pets moves pets to the UK regularly, from our Seattle and Los Angeles teams and through our partner network nationwide.
Your pet can’t fly into the UK in the cabin on a commercial flight. Dogs and cats entering Great Britain on commercial airlines must travel as manifest cargo on an approved route and clear through an animal reception centre such as Heathrow’s. The Patriot Express to Mildenhall is the main alternative, and its pet spaces are limited.
UK Pet Import Requirements, Step by Step
The United States is a listed country under Great Britain’s pet travel rules, so dogs and cats from the U.S. don’t need a rabies antibody test or a waiting period beyond the vaccine. The order of the steps still matters: a rabies vaccination given before the microchip doesn’t count.
-
First, before the rabies vaccination
ISO-compliant microchip
Your pet needs an ISO 11784/11785 microchip implanted on or before the day of the rabies vaccination that will be used for travel. Have your vet scan it and make sure the number matches exactly on every document.
-
At least 21 days before arrival
Rabies vaccination
Your pet must be at least 12 weeks old when vaccinated. After a first (primary) vaccination, your pet has to wait 21 days before entering the UK. If your pet’s boosters have been kept up without a gap since the microchip, there’s no 21-day wait.
-
90–120 days before departure
Book your pet’s flight
Request Patriot Express pet space through your transportation office as soon as booking opens, or book an approved cargo route into the UK. Your pet must travel within five days of you (or a person you authorize in writing), or the move is treated as a commercial shipment with stricter rules.
-
Within 10 days before arrival
GB health certificate and USDA endorsement
A USDA-accredited vet examines your pet and completes the Great Britain pet health certificate and owner declaration, which USDA APHIS then endorses. The certificate must be issued no more than 10 days before your pet arrives. Have the draft checked before endorsement — errors are a common reason pets are held at entry.
-
24–120 hours before arrival (dogs only)
Tapeworm treatment
A vet must treat your dog with praziquantel no less than 24 hours and no more than 120 hours (1–5 days) before its scheduled arrival in the UK, and record it on the health certificate. Count the window from the landing time, not departure. Cats don’t need this treatment.
-
Arrival day
Entry check in the UK
On commercial flights, your pet is checked at the airport’s animal reception centre, usually within a few hours. On the Patriot Express, a UK-approved pet checker meets the flight at RAF Mildenhall. When everything is in order, there’s no quarantine and your pet goes home with you.
What happens if something is missed. A pet that doesn’t meet the rules — most often a tapeworm treatment outside the 24–120 hour window — can be quarantined for up to four months or sent back to the U.S., at the owner’s expense. A dog of a banned type can be refused entry outright.
Banned Dog Breeds in the UK
Great Britain’s Dangerous Dogs Act bans these types of dog, including crosses that look like them:
- Pit Bull Terrier
- Japanese Tosa
- Dogo Argentino
- Fila Brasileiro
- XL Bully
The ban goes by a dog’s type — its build and appearance — not its paperwork, so a dog registered as another breed can still fall under it. The XL Bully was added in 2024, and an XL Bully can’t be brought into Great Britain. PCS orders don’t create an exception. If your dog is a bully breed or mix, talk to us before you plan the move.
Your PCS Countdown
Work backward from your report date. The UK’s medical timeline is short, but flight space and the tapeworm window take planning.
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| As soon as you have orders | Confirm your dog isn’t a banned type, check microchip and rabies records, and call us to map your dates |
| 90–120 days before | Request Patriot Express pet space through your transportation office, or book an approved cargo route |
| At least 21 days before | Microchip and rabies vaccination done if your pet needs them |
| About 2 weeks before | Book the health certificate, tapeworm appointment, and USDA endorsement |
| Within 10 days before | Vet exam, GB health certificate, and USDA endorsement |
| 1–5 days before landing | Tapeworm treatment for dogs, recorded on the certificate |
| Travel day | Approved crate, original endorsed certificate, rabies certificate, and orders in hand |
Summer is peak PCS season. Patriot Express pet spaces fill quickly, and airlines may apply heat embargoes to pets in cargo, so plan the flight first.
Patriot Express, Reimbursement, and Getting Your Pet There
Patriot Express
The military’s contracted flight from Baltimore/Washington International (BWI) to RAF Mildenhall carries a limited number of dogs and cats for families on PCS orders — two pets per family, with each pet and crate under 150 pounds combined. For transoceanic moves, the JTR requires using government transportation when it’s available.
A UK-approved pet checker meets each flight for a separate fee. Request space 90–120 days out; a signed Risk Acknowledgement Document is required.
Up to $2,000
For PCS orders effective on or after January 1, 2024, the Joint Travel Regulations reimburse qualifying costs for one household pet (a dog or cat) on an OCONUS move — such as microchipping, vaccinations, health certificates, boarding, and transport.
Commercial shipping is only reimbursable with a non-availability letter from your transportation office. Keep itemized receipts and confirm details with your finance office.
Our team
We prepare and check your pet’s GB paperwork, time the tapeworm treatment to your landing, and ship your pet as cargo on an approved route to Heathrow when the Patriot Express isn’t available or you have more than two pets.
Our Seattle and Los Angeles teams and partner network serve military families nationwide.
More than two pets, or a pet over the weight limit? The extra pets fly commercially as cargo on an approved route, usually into Heathrow. The JTR allowance covers one pet per PCS order. Your branch’s relief society — Air Force Aid Society, Army Emergency Relief, or Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society — may help with the rest.
Other Things to Plan For
Flight delays and the tapeworm windowA delayed or rebooked flight can push your dog past 120 hours. If your flight changes, call your vet and us right away — the treatment may need to be repeated.
Flat-faced breeds and summer heatBulldogs, Pugs, Frenchies, Persians, and similar breeds face airline restrictions, and since the UK requires cargo on commercial flights, summer heat embargoes matter. Plan these moves for cooler months when possible.
Housing and registrationPets in base housing must be registered with the base veterinary treatment facility within 30 days of arrival. UK law also requires your pet’s microchip to be registered with a UK database. Off-base landlords set their own pet rules.
Puppies and kittensBecause the rabies vaccination can’t be given before 12 weeks old and is followed by a 21-day wait, a young pet will be at least 15 weeks old before it can enter the UK.
Pet flying separatelyIf your pet travels more than five days before or after you, the move is treated as commercial, with different paperwork and a border check. Tell us your dates and we’ll set it up correctly.
The right crateCargo travel requires an IATA-compliant hard-sided crate sized to your pet. Crate and pet weight also affect your cost. See our crate guidelines.
U.S. Military Installations in the UK We Support
The UK’s entry rules are the same for every installation. Most U.S. personnel are stationed in East Anglia, close to RAF Mildenhall’s Patriot Express terminal; we plan cargo arrivals and ground transport around your base.
| Installation | Branch | Region |
|---|---|---|
| RAF Lakenheath | Air Force | Suffolk, East Anglia |
| RAF Mildenhall | Air Force | Suffolk, East Anglia |
| RAF Feltwell | Air Force (housing and vet clinic) | Norfolk, East Anglia |
| RAF Alconbury & RAF Molesworth | Air Force / Joint | Cambridgeshire |
| RAF Croughton | Air Force | Northamptonshire |
| RAF Fairford | Air Force | Gloucestershire |
| RAF Menwith Hill | Air Force / Joint | North Yorkshire |
Leaving the UK: Bringing Your Pet Back to the U.S.
The UK is not on the CDC’s high-risk rabies list, so dogs returning to the U.S. need to be at least 6 months old, have a readable microchip, and have a CDC Dog Import Form receipt. Cats follow state and airline rules. Planning trips to the EU during your tour? Your pet will need an animal health certificate from a UK official vet for each trip. We handle return moves too — see our dog travel services.
PCS to the UK with Pets: FAQs
Can my pet fly in the cabin with me to the UK?
Not on a commercial flight. Dogs and cats entering Great Britain on commercial airlines must fly as manifest cargo on an approved route. Recognized assistance dogs are the exception. The Patriot Express to RAF Mildenhall has its own pet procedures and checks.
How long does it take to prepare a pet for the UK?
About four weeks for a pet starting from scratch: a microchip and rabies vaccination at least 21 days before arrival, a GB health certificate within 10 days, and tapeworm treatment for dogs 1–5 days before landing. Flight space is usually the bigger constraint.
Does my pet need a rabies titer test for the UK?
No. Pets coming directly from the U.S. don’t need a rabies antibody test to enter Great Britain.
When does my dog need the tapeworm treatment?
No less than 24 hours and no more than 120 hours before your dog lands in the UK. A vet must give praziquantel and record it on the health certificate. A mistimed treatment is one of the most common reasons dogs are refused entry.
Can I bring my XL Bully or Pit Bull to the UK on PCS orders?
No. The UK bans the Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro, and XL Bully types, judged by appearance rather than paperwork. PCS orders don’t create an exception. Contact us before making plans if your dog may fall under the ban.
Can my pet fly on the Patriot Express to the UK?
Yes, the Patriot Express from BWI to RAF Mildenhall carries a limited number of dogs and cats for families on PCS orders, up to two per family. Request space through your transportation office 90–120 days before departure.
Will the military reimburse my pet’s move to the UK?
For PCS orders effective on or after January 1, 2024, the JTR reimburses qualifying expenses for one dog or cat up to $2,000 on an OCONUS move. Commercial shipping requires a non-availability letter from your transportation office. Confirm your eligibility with your finance office.
